Setting up higher spec USB wifi adapters in Linux can be much more problematic as drivers are less likely to be embedded within the distro and sources such as GitHub and AUR will need to be searched and packages applied via git clone which might be tricky for those new to Linux. In case of Linux a big plus for this adapter is that some of the leading distros have the drivers already embedded (even in Arch) which makes for easy setup. For Windows users link speed and wifi strength will likely determine whether to use this device or opt for something more expensive. For installations more than 600 metres from a street cabinet connected to fibre it's likely to be of little benefit to spend the extra for an AC600 or higher-spec device unless the connected PC is located where wifi is weak in which case the larger, more expensive USB adapters would improve performance. Download speed impressive at 48 Mbps considering size and cost of device. RALINK WIRELESS UTILITY INSTALLSetup a little more involved for Arch as one would need to create / edit profiles or, alternatively, install a utility to manage wireless connections, for example wifi-menu (which runs in Terminal). Worked out of the box on Windows 10, Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Arch Linux (all latest versions). So a good result, but I can't help feeling I got lucky!ĭevice has been used in a desktop PC and laptop, both have multiple OS. One nice aspect is the very small form-factor means that it can be left in the laptop with no worry about getting knocked or broken. So I'm giving 4 stars because it was very cheap and works - but if you weren't lucky enough to get a first-time install you could find the lack of proper documentation and supporting software very challenging. Whether it downloaded a driver from somewhere, or was compatible with drivers inherent to Windows 8.1 I cannot say. Fortunately, after quite a period of silent installation, the dongle came to life. My installation method was simply to connect the laptop to my router via an ethernet cable - then insert the dongle and hope for the best. That doesn't inspire confidence! I did find my own way to the company website and that had driver downloads. ![]() I installed the necessary driver, I can see my wireless dongle is getting a signal (I bought a Panda wireless N usb), but, when I try to use the wireless utility that came with the drivers, it won't open. The cd-rom did contain an exe file that claimed to be a Windows driver to cover all versions of Windows. Hello As you can see from the question, I'm having an issue with my wireless adapter. Two different website addresses were given as sources for the latest drivers: both were dead links. RALINK WIRELESS UTILITY PDFThat did include a pdf manual, but the installation instructions (for Windows anyway) were poor and garbled. The packaging claimed that it contained a user manual as well as a cd-rom in fact it only came with a cd-rom. I've installed it on a 3 year-old Toshiba laptop running Windows 8.1 (the internal wifi had died). So I went for the Racksoy as being cheap, and no worse than the big name units for reviews. RALINK WIRELESS UTILITY UPDATEHaving read reviews for many usb-wifi dongles, the pattern seems to be that even the best ones have about 10% of users finding they don't work.
